Empowering local communities through visual storytelling
PHOTOVOICES APPROACH TRAINING
We train our partners on strategies to strengthen meaningful community engagement through the Photovoices approach—a participatory photography and storytelling methodology that enables communities to document their experiences, express their perspectives, and amplify their voices.
Our training combines the principles of Photovoices International (PVI)—honoring voice, safe and ethical practice, informed consent, and transformative facilitation—with participatory photography and storytelling. Participants learn to map key stakeholders and issues in their working areas, how to give and receive feedback as well as PVI’s unique approaches to building trust and meaningful engagement with communities. They practice photography and storytelling techniques, and use photographs to explore community issues.
Through hands-on learning, reflection, and practice, partners further develop the skills and approaches needed to facilitate inclusive, respectful, and meaningful engagement. They learn not only how to use photography and storytelling to document community experiences, but also how photographs can become tools for exploring issues, encouraging dialogue, and amplifying community voices.
Following the training, the participants will develop action plans to be implemented in their working locations and receive follow-up technical support from PVI.
