Whaling has been an integral part of the culture and lives of Lamalera villagers for nearly six hundred years. More than 1,700 people live in the village today and whales are still their most important source of meat for their diets. Whale meat is also used at the island's barter market to exchange for vegetables and rice. Whaling also underpins and infuses Lamalera's traditional beliefs and culture. This gallery gives an insider's perspective on how the Lamalera people hunt whales using only a traditional harpoon.
